Republican nomination just got interesting

February 8, 2012

With the Santorum surge on Tuesday, the Republican presidential nominating race just got more interesting.  I think Romney will still win, but it will be interesting to watch the Santorum zigs and Gingrich zags before the convention.

Then the real fun begins….

  1. With the early filing deadlines, unfortunately the rules mitigate a candidate catching fire late. The days of Bobby Kennedy deciding in late March 1968 to run, and having enough delegates by June, are over. For example, in Ohio, although Santorum lost by one percentage point, he didn’t file early enough in six districts and got no delegates there. In my own congressional district, only one Santorum delegate filed by the Dec. 2011 deadline. So Santorum literally could get 100% of the vote and get only one delegate of the three my district will elect. It will be Mitt. ZZZZZZ.
